“I’m interested in messages, and if people want to take something from it, I’m thrilled”. America artist Nancy Spero is one of the pioneers of feminist art and a crucial part of the art scene in the 1960s and 1970s. Both artist and activist, her career spanning more than fifty years continues to be an example of true dedication to the political, social and cultural scene of today. She began with traditional painting, but soon realized the medium was part of the male sphere and thus marginalized her as a woman. Since then, she has made many attempts at creating a specifically feminine pictorial language in order to be able to communicate her message.
This exhibition brings together 122 pieces, including three installations, in order to underline the search the artist has made to create her own artistic language. From her earliest work as a student at the Institute of Art in Chicago, to her black paintings (1959-1966) from Paris, the Artaud Paintings and even her Codex Artaud (1969-72).
