There’s more to Granada than the Alhambra. Before letting your feet give up on you, make sure you visit the concert halls savour of the flavour of Andalusia (Eshavira, Planta Baja, El Secadero…) or simply walk about the streets. The biggest attraction is without a doubt the Alhambra (902441221, alhambra-patronato.es, Tickets online), with the Nazarite palace which dominates the city from its spectacular location. To benefit from the beauty that radiates from the different halls and courtyards, you only need to stick your head out one of the windows and the amazing views do the rest. Even if you see it a thousands of times over, it is never less powerful: The Nazarite Palaces, the Alcazaba, the Generalife Gardens… A visit to wonders such as the Lion’s Courtyard, the King’s Hall or the Abencerrajes Hall should be made obligatory for all school pupils.
The district of Albaicín, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, spreads along the hill in front of the Nazarite monument. The instructions are clear: you must amble along its primitive streets and admire its beautiful nooks and crannies. As well as the very popular viewing point of San Nicolás, the Carmen de la Victoria (Cuesta del Chapiz, s/n, 958223122), the Archeological Museum (Carrera del Darro, 41-43, 958575408, juntadeandalucia.es) and the San Miguel Bajo Square stand out. Towards the centre it is worth going to see the cathedral and its chapel Capilla Real (C/ Gran Vía de Colón, 958222959). But above all the buildings from the 14th century such as the Corral del Carbón (C/ Mariana Pineda, 12, 958225990) and the Mudéjar mansion Casa de los Tiros (C/ Pavaneras, 19, 958575466, juntadeandalucia.es) should be seen. When you have had enough of history, the best is to go out on the street with an eager smile and share a beer in the sun.

 Escapes
Just ten kilometers from the centre of Granada lies the beginnings of a paradise where you can breath fresh air and explore idilic paths: Sierra Nevada. From easy hikes such as the Cahorros de Monachil y and the Sulayr path, to steep peaks such as Mulhacén or the area known as Juego de Bolos. If it’s the right time of year, it is always worth practicing your moves on the ski slopes (902708090, cetursa.es), before global warming makes such escapes impossible. You can even glide through the snow in a dog-drawn sleigh! (Puerto de la Ragua, 958760223).
Amongst the famous villages of the Alpujarras, the best post card is the triangle between Bubión, Capileira and Pampaneira, the location of a Buddhist monastery should you need to meditate or fin yourself (Osel Ling, 958343134, a 1.600 metros).
You´ll be surprised at the contrast with an escape to Guadix (50 min), where the fashion is to sleep in the famous caves. A healthy and ecological custom making the most of the mountains. Closer to Granada (30 min.) you can visit the Museo Casa-natal del poeta Federico García Lorca in Fuente Vaqueros (C/ Poeta García Lorca, 4, 958516962, museogarcialorca.org).
If you feel like a visit to the beach, your best bet is to head south towards the cliffs of the Natural Park Maro-Cerrogordo (an hour away), where the crystal clear water lets you see the depths of the caves, and revel in the increadible colours. Your best bet is to dive rather than snorkle.
