Finca Cortesin - Casares (Malaga)

My partner looked utterly mortified when I told him it was time to go. The smile that had been pasted across his face for the entire weekend faded and reality set in. Located in Casares, between Marbella and Estepona, Finca Cortesin is a 215 hectare finca combining everything you need to escape from the outside world. The only problem? You won’t want to leave. Ever.

Luxury hotel
Location: Casares (Malaga)
Stands out for: Schilo’s cooking and no hidden extras

Finca Cortesin is one of a special breed of hotels that manages to combine luxury with a feeling of comfort and homeliness. Gone is the sterility that accompanies many a luxury accommodation with their tight lipped earnestness. Although the hotel has 67 suites, somehow you feel practically alone and at peace, the grounds being so extensive as to allow you to revel with little, if any, company.

Sitting out on your private terrace taking in the unspoilt view (the hotel has bought up the 360 degree vista in retaliation to encroaching developments on the coast), sipping your freshly squeezed orange juice, eating croissants with homemade (spectacular) chocolate spread, sprawling out on the extensive beds (so comfortable you may never want to leave) to watch movies borrowed from their DVD library (at no extra cost) or even soaking in your giant tub… Are you starting to understand why I found it hard to bundle my partner into the car at the end of our stay?

Finca Cortesin has the look and feel of a hacienda, a large family estate with peaceful nooks and crannies to take it easy. With Portuguese mosaics, aged leather chairs and a view out onto the grounds, the hotel bar is just one of them. Creating this relaxed sophistication isn’t easy: the project has been a collaborative effort including the input of interior designer Duarte Pinto Coelho, decorators Ana and Cristina Calderón, landscape gardener Gerald Haggan and landscape architect Cabell Robinson who designed the golf course, amongst others.

If you’re a golf aficionado; this is paradise. If you’re not; who cares? The spa will keep you busy for a good long while with its snow room, sauna, steam room and 25 metre indoor pool overlooking the gardens that are pretty much idilic. Outside there are more options for water babies with the choice of either a 35 or a 50 metre swimming pool. You can imagine a graceful Grace Kelly slipping in totally at home in these surroundings.

Finca Cortesin is as close to perfection I have encountered in a so-called luxury setting. So perfect that its position so close to the overbuilt coast comes as quite a shock. As you drive along the once beautiful stretch of the Costa del Sol that runs between Estepona and Sotogrande, you would be forgiven for wondering why you’re here. Its saving grace is its proximity to the villages of Casares and Gaucin, who thus far have managed to maintain their aesthetics. Leaving the little boxes that line the coastal motorway behind, the contrast serves to heighten the pleasurable arrival.

Finca Cortesin is all about details: from the fact that you can drive up, handover your keys and have someone park your car, allowing you to feel at ease from the first second, to the herbal tea and water served by the pool at no extra charge, or the way the well chosen and trained staff remember your name and have genuine conversation that doesn’t make you feel like you’re wasting your time.

If you’re a foodie, like me, then you’re in luck and you’ll be forgiven for finding that at the end of your stay you haven’t set foot outside of the hotel. There are five restaurants on the grounds, the highlight most definitely being Schilo with its selection of Asian, Arabic and European creations. Tastefully decorated, palatial with touches of the East, Schilo feels more like a private dinner party than a restaurant - with a top class chef at your disposal. We chose the menu degustación and were delighted as a series of dishes, including Hamachi Sashimi with Wasabi Sorbet, Peanut Sponge with Wasabi Mayonnaise, Green Curry with Lime Risottini, were presented. When it came to dessert we saw the spectacular creation awaiting in the kitchen but just couldn’t fathom any more. So with heavy hearts we declined, only to be told by a cheery waiter not to worry, they would bring dessert up to our room a little later. As we snuggled up to watch Horton that nighttime dessert came as a pleasant treat!

Casares Costa is actually located between Manilva and Estepona, not Marbella as mentioned in the title ;)
