Capital of the Costa del Sol Essential: climbing up the Alcazaba, visiting the Cervantes Theatre, and enjoying sardines by the beach The weather:
|
What really hooks visitors is the energy you feel as you walk through the center of town, in the area around the Calle Larios. If you consider yourself an urbanite, we recommend this stroll through the centre of Malaga. Locals stroll up and down the street, shopping in the dozens of stores that can be found on each and every corner. Sharing the streets are students and tourists who make the journey here to admire the narrow side streets and eat local tapas. At the end of Calle Larios, Plaza de la Merced is a meeting point full of bars and cafés.
The Picasso Museum in Malaga (C/ San Agustín, 8, MUSEOPICASSOMALAGA.ORG ) capitalises on the work of this legendary artist and can be found next to the house where he was born (Pza. de la Merced, 1, Web fundacionpicasso). Paintings, prints and sculptures whet the appetite of anyone hungry for culture. The Alcazaba (C/ Alcazabilla, s/n, 952122020), a Muslim fortress, dominates the view of the city from the coast. By climbing to the top of this magnificent enclave located on mount Gibralfaro, you can take in incredible panoramic views of the city. Gibralfaro Castle can be found just a few metres away (Camino Gibralfaro, 11, 952122020). This is an ancient building that was used to protect the Alcazaba during the 14th Century. At the foot of the castle is the Roman Theatre (C/ Alcazabilla, 8, 951041400), which was found by chance underneath the city, and more and more of it is unearthed every day. The Catedral de lncarnación (C/ Molina Lario, 9, 952215917) is a building that is almost five hundred years old. It has never been finished, and is known as ‘La Manquita’ (The One-armed).
For those who want something modern, and often a little risqué, the Centre of Contemporary Art in Málaga (CAC) (C/ Alemania, s/n, 952120055, cacmalaga.org), is the place to go. Both their permanent and temporary exhibitions are cutting edge, and a must-see for art lovers. The botanical gardens, Jardín Botánico La Concepción, are one of Malaga’s main attractions where you can immerse yourself in its natural beauty (Camino Jardín Botánico, 3, 952250745, LACONCEPCION.es ). They are located to the north of the city and so you will have to go by car. It is definitely worth the journey. Several country estates have been joined together here, and the gardens boast over one thousand species including hundred-year-old trees, as well as native and exotic varieties of flowers.
There is no better way to end the day than by taking a trip to the unique cemetery built in 1830 for the foreign citizens and Protestants in Malaga. The English Cemetery contains mausoleums, sculptures and gardens which predate the Doric temple that overlooks it. Gerald Brennan and Jorge Guillén among others were buried here.

Escapes
The first excursion is towards the east. The Paraje Natural Maro Cerrogordo is twenty minutes away, just past the seaside town of Nerja and boasts the best unspoilt beaches in Malaga. You can reach the cliffs here on foot and further on you can find beaches like Cantarriján with caves filled with spectacular fish and coral. If you prefer not to have to don your diving goggles, you can enjoy a boat trip around the area (Club náutico, Avda. Castilla Pérez, 2, 952524654, diving-in-spain.com). The Nerja caves (Ctra. de Maro s/n, 952529520, cuevadenerja.es) that contain a labyrinth of stalactites, waterfalls and remains from the Palaeolithic era can be found further inland.
A classic day trip destination is Ronda, a small town through which the river Tagus runs, highlighting the beautiful historical centre that stands out along the route of whitewashed towns. Numerous artists have fallen in love with its streets, its contrasts and its food. North of Malaga you can find El Chorro, a small village that has become popular with climbers and mountaineers because of the ravine “Desfiladero de los Gaitanes” which is spectacular.
If you want adventure and are longing to escape the hustle and bustle of the Costa del Sol and city life then opt for kayaking on the lake of Istan organized by the adventure company Ticket-to-Ride, along with other adventure sports packages (952905082, marbellatop100.com).
